2D Vector Addition (Bearings)
Interactive tool for teaching 2D vector addition using the component method with relative bearings (N30°E notation). Two adjustable vectors A and B with independent magnitude (1–20 units) and bearing (N/S with 0–90° offset to E/W). Real-time canvas visualization: Cartesian grid with compass labels, vectors drawn tip-to-tail, optional component breakdown (Ax, Ay, Bx, By shown as dashed lines), and resultant vector R = A + B. Worked solution panel with four-step breakdown: (1) resolve A into components using sin/cos; (2) resolve B similarly; (3) sum the component pairs (Rx = Ax + Bx, Ry = Ay + By); (4) recombine using Pythagoras and inverse tangent to find resultant magnitude and bearing. Four toggles: show/hide components of A and B, show/hide resultant, show/hide resultant's components, show/hide worked solution. Bearing angle arcs drawn at vector tails with reference axis (dotted N or S line) and angle labels. Sign convention: east and north positive; west and south negative. All calculations in arbitrary units with 2 d.p. display. Teaches: bearing notation, component resolution using trigonometry, vector addition principle, recombination via magnitude and angle, and applications in navigation and physics.
